A little about small dogs
There’s a lot to learn and think about when you welcome a small dog of any age into your home.
Here’s a few facts, figures and tips from the experts to help you understand your four-legged friend that little bit better.
Watch them grow
It takes just 9 months for a small breed pup to grow to full size. That means in the first year, your little one will have multiplied his birth weight by around 20 times! Small dogs grow about 12 times faster than humans – becoming full adults at 12 months.
A discerning palate
Be prepared for your small dog to be selective when it comes to his food! Small breeds can be very picky about what they eat. They're much more likely to leave some of their daily delights – or even completely refuse a meal – than larger dogs. Here’s a tip: be sure to serve their food in smaller chunks, of course, at Cesar all our food is adapted for their requirements.
Keep talking
Your small friend always has something to say, so don’t count on him to keep the noise down! Smaller dogs tend to be much more vocal than larger ones. If something disturbs them or gets them excited, you can be sure they’ll let you know with plenty of energy.
Fat fighters
Smaller dogs are often more likely to put on weight, this could be because it is easier to overfeed them, especially when they are fed dry food. Make sure you manage your special friend's diet through sensible portions and treats, whilst encouraging an active lifestyle. If you are unsure, please refer to the feeding guide on all our products. We pride ourselves on making delicious recipes that your small dog will love, and will give him endless exuberance.
Long-term companions
As you know, small dogs provide so much love, and with a small dog it’s likely you’ll enjoy this, and their company, for a lot longer. On average, lovely little ones can live up to 15 years, compared with just 8 years for larger dogs.
